Why the prices are published here
Finding out what something costs should not require a phone call. If you are considering starting therapy, price is one of the first questions that comes up, and it is fair to be able to answer it before taking any step.
You will not find introductory offers or free discovery calls here either. The first session is real therapeutic work, and it is charged as such: it respects both people's time.
What a session includes
One hour of therapeutic work, the preparation beforehand and the follow-up of the process between one session and the next. There is no registration or sign-up fee, and no lock-in: you can end therapy whenever you consider it right.
How much does a psychologist cost in Barcelona?
If you are comparing before deciding, it helps to know that psychology fees are not regulated in Spain: each professional sets their own, which is why you will see very different prices from one practice to another.
As a general reference, the usual range for an individual session in Spain tends to fall between 50 and 90 euros, and in large cities such as Barcelona or Madrid it is common to find it above that average. Online therapy tends to sit somewhat lower. These are indicative ranges, not an official rate.
Price is affected by things such as session length, whether it is in person or online, the area the practice is in, and the format (individual, couples or child therapy). What should not vary is clarity: the price ought to be available before you have to hand over your details or book an appointment.
If it does not fit your budget right now
That is a reasonable and very common concern, and it deserves an honest answer. Therapy is a sustained expense over time, not a one-off payment, so it makes sense to do the sums before starting rather than having to interrupt the process halfway through.
If budget is the main constraint, there are legitimate alternatives worth knowing about: psychological care through the public health system via your GP, the psychological support services offered by some city councils, or university centres and professional associations that provide reduced-rate sessions.
Questions about fees
How much does a therapy session cost on average in Spain?
There is no official rate: prices are not regulated and each professional sets their own. As a reference, the usual range for an individual session tends to fall between 50 and 90 euros, and in large cities such as Barcelona it is common to find prices above that average.
Why do prices vary so much between psychologists?
Session length, format (in person or online), the area the practice is in and the type of therapy (individual, couples or child) all play a part. As there is no regulated rate, each professional sets their own freely.
Are there options if I cannot afford private therapy?
Yes. You can request psychological care through the public health system via your GP, look into the psychological support services offered by your city council, or ask about university centres and professional associations that provide reduced-rate sessions.
Does online therapy cost the same as in-person therapy?
Yes. The session has the same length, the same preparation and the same follow-up, whether it takes place at the Barcelona practice or by video call.
Why does the first session cost more than the following ones?
Because it involves more work, even though it lasts the same: it includes the initial assessment of your situation and planning how to approach the process.
Do I have to commit to a number of sessions?
No. You can pay for each session separately and decide as you go. Session packs are simply an option for those who prefer to pay for several in advance and get a better rate.
Do session packs expire?
There is no rigid deadline: you set the pace of therapy. If you need to space sessions out, it is discussed in session.
How do I pay?
It is arranged directly in session. If you have any question about payment before starting, you can ask when booking, with no commitment.
