What happens in the first session with a psychologist

24 August 2026 · 6 min read

It's one of the questions that comes up most before booking, even more than the decision to start itself: "What am I supposed to say?", "Are they going to ask me a lot of questions in a row?", "What if I can't explain myself well?" Not knowing what's going to happen in that first hour holds a lot of people back almost as much as doubting whether they really need it.

What actually happens

The first session is, above all, a conversation. There's no chain of questionnaire-style questions, no script to follow in a set order. It usually starts by explaining how confidentiality works, and from there the space is yours: what brought you in, since when, how it's affecting your everyday life.

You don't need to arrive with a tidy account. It's common to start wherever feels most natural and let things connect as you go, with questions that help clarify, not examine.

What you don't need to prepare

You don't need a clear diagnosis, or to know exactly how to name what's going on, or to arrive with your reasons ranked by importance. It's also fine if you struggle to find the words, if you get emotional, or if, on the contrary, you talk about it completely calmly: there's no right way to experience a first session.

You don't need to anticipate what will happen in the following ones either. This first conversation is, in part, exactly for that: to start deciding how to approach the process.

Length and format

The session lasts one hour, whether it takes place at the Barcelona practice or by video call: the format doesn't change what happens within it.

What happens afterwards

When it ends, there's no automatic commitment to continue. Typically, based on what was discussed in that first conversation, both people talk through how the process could be approached if you decide to continue, but the decision is always yours: you can take whatever time you need before the next session, or not book one at all.

If the uncertainty about what's going to happen is the only thing holding you back, it might be time to resolve it directly by booking that first appointment.
